Specimen size classes

Collectors sort specimens by how much shelf or case they need. The names are informal, but they make a collection easier to plan.

The usual classes

• Thumbnail: fits in a 1-inch box.
• Miniature: up to about 2 inches.
• Small cabinet: roughly 2 to 4 inches.
• Cabinet: roughly 4 to 7 inches, the classic display size.
• Large cabinet: anything bigger, usually a centerpiece.

How this site assigns them

We read the weight or measurement in each listing title. By weight: under 100 g is miniature, 100 to 500 g small cabinet, 500 g to 2 kg cabinet, and over 2 kg large cabinet. By length we use the inch ranges above. Pieces without a stated size are left unclassed.
